田能村直入 Tanomura Chokunyu (1814-1907) Japanese art kakejiku kakemono wall hanging scroll / Suiboku Ink Sansui Mountain Landscapes Weeping Willow Man admiring View with Box RE666

田能村直入 Tanomura Chokunyu (1814-1907)
Nanga artist from the end of the Edo period to the Meiji period. He is known as one of the last literati painters in Japan. At the age of nine, he learned under 田能村竹田 Tanomura Chikuden (1777-1835) and studied Nanga and 唐詩選 Toshisen (selected Chinese poetry). He also studied a wide range of subjects, including Kokugaku, Yomei, and martial arts. He was loved by Chikuden for his talent and became his adopted son. 高橋草坪 Takahashi Sohei (1804-1835) and 帆足杏雨 Hoashi Kyou (1810-1884) were senior brothers. In 1878, he established the Kyoto Prefectural School of Painting and became its first principal. He developed his own unique style of painting by adding new Japanese painting techniques to the old methods and was a central figure in the Meiji period.

with signature 'Chokunyu Sansho' 直入山樵 and seal 'Mumyo' 无名

A quiet sense of time settles into the landscape, the misted mountains, the weeping willow, and the lone figure pausing to admire the view suggesting a moment held between movement and stillness—an atmosphere that aligns with Tanomura Chokunyu’s literati sensibility, where contemplation and natural rhythm merge without strain; Chokunyu (1814–1907), adopted son of Tanomura Chikuden and one of the final major nanga painters bridging late Edo and Meiji, studied Chinese poetry, kokugaku, Yomei thought, and martial arts, later founding the Kyoto Prefectural School of Painting in 1878 and shaping Meiji‑period painting through a synthesis of classical literati methods and newer Japanese techniques, while this scroll bears the signature ‘Chokunyu Sansho’ with the seal ‘Mumyo,’ and the piece is accompanied by its box, allowing the scene’s suspended, reflective interval to settle into a calm, enduring presence.
