田能村直入 Tanomura Chokunyu (1814-1907)
Nanga artist from the end of the Edo period to the Meiji period. He is known as one of the last literati painters in Japan. At the age of nine, he learned under 田能村竹田 Tanomura Chikuden (1777-1835) and studied Nanga and 唐詩選 Toshisen (selected Chinese poetry). He also studied a wide range of subjects, including Kokugaku, Yomei, and martial arts. He was loved by Chikuden for his talent and became his adopted son. 高橋草坪 Takahashi Sohei (1804-1835) and 帆足杏雨 Hoashi Kyou (1810-1884) were senior brothers.
In 1878, he established the Kyoto Prefectural School of Painting and became its first principal. He developed his own unique style of painting by adding new Japanese painting techniques to the old methods and was a central figure in the Meiji period.
